History

The Kálnoky story follows a family across centuries and borders: from documented landholding in Transylvania to a Moravian branch, exile and renewed ties to its ancestral villages.

Roots in Transylvania

A 1252 royal grant to Bencenc, son of Akadás, records an early connection to the region around Kálnok and Kőröspatak. It is evidence of landholding, not an unbroken documented genealogy to every later person bearing the name.

Several paths through Europe

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries relatives held lands and served Transylvanian rulers. István began Miklósvár Castle in 1648; his son Sámuel received the title of count in 1697. A marriage in 1764 brought a Moravian estate into the family, and a later branch settled there.

Separation and return

Revolution in 1848–49 placed relatives on different sides. After 1918, land reform weakened the Kőröspatak estate. Hugó inherited it in 1928, left in 1939, and lived apart from the ancestral home. Descendants returned to visit from 1987; Tibor later settled in Transylvania and pursued the recovery of Kőröspatak Castle.

    Ludmilla chose Hugó in 1923. He inherited in 1928 and left the region in 1939.
